13 Sec ago - ## Carry On... Up the Zeitgeist: An Extremely Biased History

The Carry On films… a festering boil on the backside of British cinema, or a misunderstood comedic supernova? My decades of immersed scholarship (and suffering) compel me to declare: both. These celluloid sausages, crammed with innuendo denser than a Christmas pudding, represent a cultural singularity. To dissect them is to dissect post-war Britain itself, warts and all.

Beginning in 1958 with Carry On Sergeant (a surprisingly restrained affair, hinting at the horrors to come), the franchise hijacked a nation's psyche. It wasn’t subtle. It wasn't clever. But, like a particularly virulent strain of the common cold, it was effective. The formula, as rigidly adhered to as a Victorian corset, involved stuffing a cast of reliable, if not strictly talented, performers into some vaguely topical setting (hospital, army, Roman Empire, space – the audacity!) and letting the double entendres fly faster than Sid James’ toupee in a gale.

The humour? Primarily lavatorial, anatomical, and relentlessly, excruciatingly pun-based. Kenneth Williams’ exasperated sighs became the soundtrack of a generation reluctantly chuckling at jokes their grandfathers would have considered risqué. Hattie Jacques, a comedic titan trapped in a world of nudge-nudge wink-wink, valiantly attempted to elevate the material, her every eye-roll a silent scream against the mediocrity. And Sid James… ah, Sid James. The leering satyr, forever chasing skirts shorter than his attention span, his cackle echoing through the increasingly threadbare sets like the death knell of good taste.

The Carry On films thrived in an era of repressed desires and simmering social change. They were a safety valve, a cheeky release in a society still clinging to post-war austerity. But as Britain lurched towards the swinging sixties, the franchise’s bawdy humour began to feel increasingly out of step. The world was experimenting with free love and psychedelia, while the Carry On team remained stubbornly fixated on matron’s ample bosom and the possibility of a misplaced sausage.

By the 70s, the films had devolved into self-parody, a grotesque pantomime of their former selves. The innuendo became cruder, the plots thinner, and the wigs… oh, the wigs! Each new instalment felt like a desperate attempt to recapture a magic that had long since evaporated. The final gasp, Carry On Columbus (1992), was a cinematic shipwreck of epic proportions, a fittingly disastrous end to a franchise that had long outstayed its welcome.

Yet, despite their flaws, their relentless vulgarity, and their often cringe-inducing humour, the Carry On films hold a peculiar place in the British cultural landscape. They are a time capsule, a reminder of a bygone era of seaside postcards and dodgy comedians. They are a testament to the enduring power of lowbrow humour, and proof that sometimes, the cheapest laughs are the ones that stick with you the longest. Just don’t expect me to admit I enjoyed them.
