(Opening Scene: A storm-ravaged battlefield. Corpses litter the mud. A lone figure, ARTHUR, now a grizzled, weary man in his late 30s, sits amongst the carnage, clutching a broken sword. He’s no longer the vibrant king, but a ghost haunted by the past.)
(Voiceover - Arthur, weary and resigned): They called me Arthur Pendragon, King of the Britons. Once, hope shimmered in my eyes like Excalibur’s blade. They sang of Camelot, a beacon of chivalry and justice. But all beacons eventually fade, consumed by the darkness they strive to banish. My story isn't one of triumph, but of how even the purest intentions can pave a road to ruin.
(Flashback: Arthur, a bright-eyed young man, pulls Excalibur from the stone. The crowd roars its approval. Guinevere smiles radiantly at him.)
I was a bastard, hidden away, raised by a simple blacksmith. Destiny, they said, thrust greatness upon me. But destiny is a cruel mistress. It gave me Excalibur, the symbol of hope, but also the burden of impossible choices.
(Montage: Camelot in its prime. Knights jousting, Guinevere laughing, Merlin’s wise eyes watching Arthur. Then, shadows begin to creep in. Arguments at the Round Table, Lancelot’s pained gaze meeting Guinevere’s. Mordred, young and ambitious, watching from the sidelines with a simmering resentment.)
I built Camelot brick by bloody brick, believing I could forge a better world. I gathered the bravest knights, swore oaths of loyalty and honour. But even the strongest bonds can fray under the weight of betrayal. Lancelot, my closest friend, my brother-in-arms… he fell in love with my queen. Their love, a poisoned flower blooming in the heart of my kingdom.
(Scene: Arthur confronts Guinevere and Lancelot. The pain in his eyes is palpable. Guinevere is tearful, Lancelot defiant.)
I couldn't turn a blind eye. Justice demanded action. But every blow I struck against them felt like a wound tearing through my own soul. Guinevere, exiled. Lancelot, banished. Camelot fractured, the ideal shattered.
(Scene: Mordred, older and hardened, rallying disaffected knights to his banner. He speaks of Arthur’s weakness, his failures.)
My own nephew, Mordred, the son I never knew I had, a product of my father’s sin, saw my vulnerability. He saw the cracks in the foundation I had so painstakingly built and exploited them. He turned my knights against me, poisoned the whispers in the kingdom, painting me as a broken king.
(Scene: The final battle at Camlann. A bloodbath. Arthur, now a seasoned warrior, fights with the desperation of a man who has lost everything. He faces Mordred, their swords clashing.)
In the end, it was family that destroyed me. On the fields of Camlann, brother fought brother, friend fought friend. I struck down Mordred, but not before his poisoned blade found its mark.
(Back to the opening scene. Arthur clutches the broken Excalibur. A faint, ethereal glow emanates from the distance. The Lady of the Lake approaches.)
They say I was taken to Avalon, a mythical island of healing. A legend to be whispered in the long winter nights. Perhaps. But what I feel now is not peace, but an unending sorrow. The weight of what I lost, of what I could have been.
(Arthur closes his eyes, the broken sword falling from his grasp. The Lady of the Lake reaches out to him. The screen fades to black. The final sound: the mournful cry of a raven.)
