Synopsis:
Bartholomew "Barty" Butterfield isn't your typical student. At 32, he's mastered the art of academic inertia. He's a PhD candidate in… something. He can’t quite remember. Barty’s real major is “perpetual studenthood.” He’s perfected the art of grant applications, scholarship essays filled with poignant (fabricated) hardships, and the delicate dance of charming professors just enough to avoid actual work. His dorm room, a shrine to prolonged adolescence, is a testament to a decade of expertly crafted excuses.
Barty's cushy existence is threatened by the arrival of earnest freshman, Kevin. Kevin, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, is genuinely excited about learning. He actually reads the assigned texts. He attends office hours. He participates in class. He’s everything Barty loathes.
Kevin, assigned to be Barty's mentee, sees him as a seasoned academic veteran. He hangs on Barty’s every (mostly made-up) word, asking for advice on research methodologies and career paths. Barty initially brushes him off, but Kevin's relentless enthusiasm cracks Barty's cynical facade. He finds himself reluctantly offering Kevin genuine, albeit cynical, advice.
