Heretic, as a project, was cursed from the jump. Not in a "lights falling, actors getting injured" kind of way, more like a slow, creeping dread that permeated every decision, every rewrite, every location scout. It started with the script, a dense, philosophical thriller about a 15th-century astronomer who challenges the geocentric model of the universe. Beautiful, yes, but trying to wrangle that intellectual density into a palatable two-hour film? That’s where my grey hairs started sprouting.
Our first director, a visionary European auteur, saw the film as a Bergman-esque meditation on faith and reason. He wanted long, static shots of the night sky, whispered dialogue in Latin, and a lead actor who resembled a gaunt El Greco painting. The studio, however, envisioned something closer to "Gladiator with telescopes." Clash of visions, predictably, led to a clash of personalities. The director stormed off after a particularly heated argument about the practicality of filming a solar eclipse with period-accurate equipment (spoiler: not practical).
Enter me, stage left. I inherited a script in shambles, a demoralized crew, and a studio breathing down my neck about budget overruns. My first move was to hire Eleanor Vance, a young, but fiercely talented director known for her indie sci-fi flicks. Heresy, she argued, was about rebellion, about the thrill of challenging established power. She injected the script with a much-needed dose of energy, leaning into the thriller aspects while still respecting the intellectual core.
Casting was another ordeal. Our original "El Greco" lead had moved on to a lucrative perfume commercial, leaving us scrambling. Eleanor insisted on Liam O'Connell, a rising star known for his intensity and… let’s just say… unconventional method acting. Liam, bless his heart, decided the best way to prepare for the role was to live like a 15th-century astronomer. This involved sleeping under the stars, building his own astrolabe (which he insisted on using in the film), and adopting a strict diet of root vegetables and mead. He also started speaking in cryptic riddles, which made production meetings… interesting.
Then there was the location. We’d initially planned to shoot in a picturesque Italian village, but unforeseen permit issues (something about a local saint’s festival and a donkey race) forced us to relocate to rural Romania. The Carpathian Mountains were stunning, no doubt, but the local crew’s understanding of English was… limited. Much of the filming involved frantic hand gestures, charades, and the liberal use of Google Translate. One particularly memorable incident involved a scene requiring a burning pyre. Due to a mistranslation, what we got was a bonfire the size of a small car, nearly setting the surrounding forest ablaze.
Despite the chaos, the near-constant threat of rain, and Liam’s increasingly erratic behavior (he started referring to himself as "Brother Copernicus"), we finished the film. It wasn't the film anyone initially envisioned, but it was a film. A strange, beautiful, and undeniably unique film. Critics were polarized, audiences were intrigued, and Liam O’Connell won an award for his performance (which he accepted in character, naturally).
Heretic, in the end, was a testament to the resilience of filmmaking, the power of collaboration, and the occasional necessity of embracing a little heresy. Would I do it again? Probably not. But I wouldn't trade the experience for anything. Except maybe a lifetime supply of aspirin.
