Opening Scene:
Dust motes dance in the afternoon sunbeams slanting through the window of a small, cluttered workshop. Gears, springs, and tiny tools litter the workbench. ABE, a man with a kindly face etched with the wisdom of nearly ninety years, meticulously reassembles a pocket watch. He hums a mournful tune, the melody punctuated by the click of metal on metal. His grandson, PETER, 19 and brimming with restless energy, leans against the doorframe.
PETER: You heard from Steve yet, Grandpa Abe?
Abe sighs, placing the watch face down. His gnarled hand runs over the smooth silver.
ABE: Not a word, son. Not a word. This whole thing…it breaks my heart.
PETER: He’s doing what he thinks is right.
ABE: So’s Tony. That’s the tragedy of it all, Peter. Good men, both of them, driven apart by good intentions. I've seen it before, you know. Brother against brother, friend against friend. This country… it seems we’re destined to tear ourselves apart every few generations.
Flashback – Black and White, Grainy Footage:
A younger ABE, still strong and vital, stands in a muddy trench. The air is thick with smoke and the sound of artillery fire. He clutches a rifle, his face grim. A wounded soldier cries out nearby. The year is 1917.
ABE (voiceover): The Great War… they called it. Thought it’d be the war to end all wars. Foolishness. War never truly ends. It just… changes form. Back then, it was trenches and mustard gas. Now, it’s… well, you see it on the television. Super soldiers and flying metal men. Different weapons, same heartbreak.
Present:
Peter picks up a framed photograph from the workbench. It shows two young men in army uniforms, arms slung around each other’s shoulders, grinning at the camera.
PETER: You and Sergeant Miller… you were best friends. You told me he saved your life.
Abe takes the photo, his eyes distant.
ABE: He did, Peter. And then… a few months later, at Belleau Wood… we were on opposite sides of No Man’s Land. Didn’t even know it until… until I saw his face across the battlefield. He was charging our line. I… I had to shoot.
Peter looks at his grandfather, his eyes wide with understanding.
PETER: That’s…
ABE: War makes monsters of us all, Peter. It forces us to make impossible choices. Choices that haunt us long after the guns fall silent.
Climax:
Peter watches a news report about the escalating conflict between Captain America and Iron Man. The footage shows the two heroes clashing, their former comrades now bitter enemies. Peter looks at his grandfather, who is quietly working on the watch. He sees the pain in the old man’s eyes, the echoes of past battles still raging within him.
ABE: They both think they’re fighting for what’s right. And maybe they are. But they’ve forgotten the most important thing.
PETER: What’s that, Grandpa?
Abe closes the watch, the delicate mechanism clicking into place. He holds it up, the polished surface reflecting the light.

Final Scene:

Abe nods slowly.
ABE: Good. Maybe now… maybe now they can all start to heal.
