The film centers around a small pack, decimated by human encroachment. We open with the playful yips of pups, a sonic tapestry woven with the rustle of leaves and the gentle gurgle of a stream – a soundscape of innocence I meticulously crafted using field recordings from pristine wilderness. The sound is warm, almost tactile, inviting the audience into their world. This was the ‘before,’ the memory the survivors clung to.
The shift begins subtly. A distant gunshot, barely audible, buried under the wind, foreshadows the coming storm. Then the screams. Not the theatrical Hollywood howl, but a choked, guttural cry, captured from a recording of a trapped wolf – pure, unfiltered anguish. I mixed it low, almost subliminal, yet potent enough to prick the listener's primal fear.
The music, sparse and melancholic, reflects the dwindling pack. A lone cello mirrors the alpha female's lament, processed with a slight reverb to create a sense of emptiness, of calling out into a void. The happier sounds of the past are now ghostly echoes, filtered through layers of distortion and decay, representing the fractured memories of the survivors.
The attack scene is brutal, but not in the way you’d expect. I avoided gratuitous violence, instead focusing on the emotional impact. The snapping of twigs under heavy boots, the panicked breaths of the fleeing wolves, the sickening thud of a body hitting the ground - these sounds, coupled with the terrified whimpers of the pups, painted a far more horrifying picture than any visual gore could.
As the pack dwindles, the soundscape becomes increasingly desolate. The wind, once a gentle whisper, becomes a biting howl, layered with the creaking of dead trees, mirroring the wolves’ inner desolation. The once vibrant forest now sounds hollow, echoing with their loss. I used contact mics on the frozen ground to capture the chilling crunch of each pawstep, emphasizing the wolves' isolation in a hostile world.

I blended recordings of several wolves, each with a unique timbre, to create a complex, layered sound that expressed a multitude of emotions – grief, rage, despair, but ultimately, resignation. The howl fades into the wind, leaving behind an echoing silence, broken only by the faintest crackle of the dying embers of their once vibrant world.
My goal was to create a soundscape that resonated on a visceral level, allowing the audience to feel the wolves' sorrow, not just hear it. I wanted them to leave the cinema with the weight of their story pressing down on them, a haunting reminder of what we stand to lose. And judging by the hushed silence in the mixing room after the final playback, I think, I achieved it.
