## Smile 2: The Curious Case of the Vanishing Smiles
The production of Smile 2 wasn't plagued by demonic entities (as far as I'm aware), but it was certainly a strange one. The first film's unexpected success threw Paramount into a frenzy, demanding a sequel ASAP. They brought back the original director, Parker Finn, who, bless his heart, looked like he hadn't slept since the premiere of the first film. He had this thousand-yard stare, constantly muttering about "infectious joy" and "uncanny valley grins."
My initial brief was straightforward: amp up the jump scares, broaden the mythology, and make it bigger. Easy enough, right? Wrong. The first strange occurrence happened during casting. Actors auditioning for the smiling victims would inexplicably break down, some giggling hysterically, others weeping inconsolably. We lost three potential leads before we figured out that showing them the original film's climax as a "tone reference" was maybe not the best idea.
Then there were the dailies. Perfectly normal takes would, upon review, have subtle distortions. Smiles would seem to linger a frame too long, eyes would twitch unnaturally, and background extras would develop unsettlingly wide grins. At first, I dismissed it as digital artifacting, a quirk of the new cameras we were using. But when the distortions started appearing in footage shot on different cameras, on different days, even on different locations, I started getting seriously creeped out.
The sound design team reported similar anomalies. Whispers would appear in the audio where there were none on set. A chilling, almost subliminal laughter would creep into the mix, only audible through headphones. One sound editor swore he heard his own name whispered in the dead of night while reviewing a particularly unsettling scene. He promptly quit, citing "creative differences."
The weirdest incident, however, involved the film's climax. We had built this elaborate set – a twisted carnival funhouse mirroring the protagonist's deteriorating mental state. During the shoot, the practical effects team triggered a pyrotechnic charge a little too early. The resulting explosion, while thankfully controlled, caused a power surge that wiped a significant chunk of the day's footage. Not just from the cameras rolling on set, but from the security cameras monitoring the studio lot. It was as if that particular moment in time had simply vanished from the record.
We reshot the climax, of course, with considerably less pyrotechnics. But there was this palpable unease on set afterwards. The cast and crew were jumpy, whispering amongst themselves. Even Parker seemed rattled, his usual thousand-yard stare replaced with something closer to genuine fear.
Despite the strangeness, we wrapped production, albeit a few weeks behind schedule. The post-production process was relatively uneventful, thankfully. The strange distortions and audio anomalies disappeared, replaced by standard jump scare sound effects and expertly crafted visual horror.
Smile 2 ultimately became a box office hit, surpassing the success of the first film. Critics praised its disturbing imagery and unsettling atmosphere. But those of us who worked on it knew the truth: there was something strange, something other lurking beneath the surface of those manufactured scares. Something that made the smiles just a little bit too real. And to this day, whenever I see a particularly wide, toothy grin, I can't help but feel a shiver run down my spine.
