The year is 1967. Mini-skirts are in, the Beatles are dropping Sgt. Pepper, and I, Archibald "Archie" Featherstonehaugh, am knee-deep in custard. Not just any custard mind you, but flammable custard, specially formulated for the climax of "Carry On Camping." That’s right, I’m the man who brought you the exploding brassiere, the runaway tent, and Kenneth Williams' perpetually horrified expression – though that last one was more his own doing.

My career in cinematic mayhem started innocently enough. A young lad from Birmingham, I dreamt of building bridges, not blowing them up. But fate, in the form of a misdelivered crate of dynamite and a touring Shakespeare company desperate for a "bang," had other plans. I discovered a knack for controlled chaos, for making the impossible believable, and soon found myself in the burgeoning British film industry.

The "Carry On" series was a gift from the comedy gods. Low budget, high laughs, and a willingness to try anything – the perfect playground for a practical effects man like myself. CGI? Never heard of it. We did it all for real. Need a collapsing Roman chariot? Give me some plywood, a rusty bicycle, and a disgruntled donkey. Want a giant inflatable Barbara Windsor? I'll have her bobbing over the English Channel by teatime.

Of course, things didn't always go smoothly. There was the infamous "Carry On Doctor" incident with the malfunctioning bedpan catapult (Sid James still owes me for that dry cleaning bill), and the "Carry On Up the Khyber" yak stampede that resulted in the accidental relocation of half the catering tent to Windsor Castle. But that's the beauty of practical effects – the unpredictability, the element of danger. It kept things interesting, to say the least.

We were a tight-knit crew, bound by a shared love of silliness and a healthy disregard for health and safety regulations. The actors, bless their cotton socks, were always game. Joan Sims would happily be drenched in treacle, Kenneth Williams would endure any indignity with a withering glare, and Hattie Jacques could wield a rolling pin like a Viking berserker.

Over the years, I've seen trends come and go. The rise of CGI threatened to render my skills obsolete, but thankfully, audiences still crave the tangible, the real. The weight of a falling custard pie, the wobble of a collapsing set – these things have a visceral impact that pixels can't replicate.

Now, as I look back on my career, surrounded by a workshop full of exploding brassieres, malfunctioning catapults, and a suspiciously stained portrait of Barbara Windsor, I can honestly say, I wouldn't trade it for the world. It’s been a wild ride, a testament to the power of laughter, and proof that sometimes, the best effects are the ones you can touch, taste, and occasionally, set on fire. Just don't tell the fire marshal.
