My approach to the sound design of Emilia Pérez aimed to weave a vibrant sonic tapestry that reflects the protagonist's extraordinary journey of transformation. From gritty realism to surreal fantasy, the soundscape needed to evolve alongside Emilia, mirroring her emotional and physical metamorphosis.

Phase 1: The Gritty Underbelly:

Emilia's initial world, steeped in the harsh realities of cartel life, demanded a raw and visceral soundscape. We prioritized location recordings in bustling Mexican marketplaces and desolate desert landscapes to capture authentic ambience. These formed the foundation, layered with meticulously designed foley – the crunch of gravel underfoot, the metallic click of a gun, the rustling of illicit packages. The score, incorporating traditional Mexican instrumentation with dissonant electronic elements, underscored the underlying tension and Emilia's internal conflict.

Phase 2: The Metamorphosis:

As Emilia undergoes her transformation, the sound design subtly shifts. The initial harshness begins to soften, giving way to a more ethereal quality. We introduced synthesized sounds – shimmering pads, otherworldly vocalizations – that subtly hint at the magical realism unfolding. The score takes on a more introspective tone, incorporating elements of bolero and ranchera, reflecting Emilia's yearning for a different life.

Phase 3: Embracing the New Identity:

Emilia’s new life in Paris required a complete sonic overhaul. The soundscape became more sophisticated and cosmopolitan. The bustling energy of Parisian streets, captured in intricate detail, contrasts sharply with her previous life. We incorporated the delicate sounds of Parisian cafes, the romantic melodies of street musicians, and the gentle lapping of the Seine. The score evolves into a lush, orchestral arrangement, tinged with Latin influences, celebrating her newfound freedom and identity.

Key Sound Design Elements:

Emilia’s Voice: Special attention was paid to Emilia's voice, utilizing subtle pitch shifting and vocal processing during the transformation scenes to reflect the physiological changes she’s undergoing. Her voice becomes smoother, more feminine, signifying her evolving identity.
Diegetic vs. Non-Diegetic Sound: A carefully balanced interplay between diegetic sound (sounds originating from within the film's world) and non-diegetic sound (sound added during post-production, such as the score) was crucial. This allowed us to subtly guide the audience's emotional response to Emilia's journey.
Silence as a Tool: Strategic use of silence played a pivotal role, particularly in moments of intense emotion or reflection, allowing the audience to connect with Emilia’s inner turmoil and the weight of her decisions.
