Famous actors were cast, but their performances felt phoned in, perhaps due to a lack of direction or a disconnect with the animated medium.

The film's release was met with widespread disappointment. Critics lambasted the weak narrative, unconvincing characters, and unsettling animation. Fans, who had eagerly awaited a return to Middle-earth, felt betrayed by the film's deviation from the spirit and tone of Tolkien's work.
