The whole mess started, as these things often do, with a bake sale. Earl, bless his bee-loving heart, was the quiet sort, kept to himself down by the creek with his hives. Folks said he talked to his bees, but that’s just small-town gossip for you.

My meringue that year was ethereal, a cloud kissed by sunshine. We raised enough for a solid gold roof, I swear. But then, things got… strange.

First, Mrs. Higgins, known for her iron constitution and even iron-er will, claimed the pie gave her visions. She started rambling about shimmering lights in the garden and conversations with squirrels. Then little Timmy Perkins, after polishing off a whole slice, started speaking in fluent French. He got this faraway look in his eyes, like he was gazing at something nobody else could see. “They ain’t ordinary bees, Martha,” he whispered, his voice low and buzzing, just like… well, you know. “They found something special down by the creek. Something… ancient.”

Ancient. That's when the whispers started. Tales of strange symbols carved near the creek, of lights flickering in the woods at night. Then the disappearances began. Old Man Hemlock, gone. Mrs. Henderson’s prize-winning poodle, vanished. Even the stray cat that always slept under my porch, poof.

The sheriff, a man whose brain was as smooth and empty as a freshly waxed floor, dismissed it as "wildlife." But I knew, deep in my housewife’s intuition, that Earl's honey was the key. Those weren’t ordinary bees. They were… something else. Something that had been awakened by whatever ancient thing they'd found in the creek. And whatever it was, it was hungry.

I never touched Earl's honey again. Stuck to good old supermarket clover, thank you very much. The disappearances eventually stopped. The town went back to normal, or as normal as a town filled with squirrel-talking, French-speaking folks could be. But I never forgot. And sometimes, on a quiet night, I still hear the buzzing. A low, humming drone that reminds me that some secrets are best left undisturbed, especially at the bottom of a creek… and in a prize-winning pie.
